According to the US Coast Guard on Thursday, 11 people died and 31 others were rescued from the wreckage of a vessel off the coast Puerto Rico.
Coast Guard tweeted Thursday night that responding crews had rescued 31 survivors, 11 females and 20 men. They also added that “11 dead” were recovered.
The vessel capsized 12 miles (19 km) north from Puerto Rico’s Desecheo Island. It was believed to have been part of an illegal migrant voyage.
Coast Guard watchstanders received an email around Thursday noon reporting on the sighting of “a capsized vessel” with people in it.
As it is not clear how many people were on the boat, the Coast Guard and its partners continue to respond.
Puerto Rico is an American territory that is unincorporated and is an island in the Caribbean.
