Clashes broke out between two groups in Kasampur village here after a man was thrashed for reportedly harassing a woman in the district, police said on Tuesday.
The man has been arrested, they said.
The incident took place on Monday when the man misbehaved with the woman when she went out to throw garbage, SP (rural) Nepal Singh said.
The man was thrashed by the woman’s family members and handed over to the police. Later, clashes broke out between two groups over the incident.
A case was registered against the man and another person under relevant sections of IPC, Singh said.
“The man has been arrested,” he said.
The official added that 17 people have been booked for the apprehension of breach of peace.
Security has been tightened in the village, police added.
