With a highest single-day spike of 1,078 cases, 256 from Surat alone, the coronavirus case count in Gujarat crossed 52,000 on Thursday, the state health department said.
While the number of cases reached 52,563, death toll due to the pandemic in the state rose to 2,257 with 28 patients dying since Wednesday evening, it said.
718 persons were discharged from hospitals in the state during this period, taking the total of recovered coronavirus patients to 37,958.
Of 28 persons who succumbed to the viral infection since previous evening, 14 died in Surat district alone, followed by five in Ahmedabad, two each in Kutch, Patan and Vadodara and one each in Bhavnagar, Botad and Morbi.
Gujarat was in the 12th spot in the country in terms of new cases reported on Thursday and in the eighth spot in terms of active cases, the health department said.
So far 5,92,123 tests have been conducted in the state.
There are 12,348 active cases in Gujarat. Eighty-nine of these patients are on ventilator.
205 patients recovered in Surat district on Thursday, followed by 203 in Ahmedabad and 71 in Vadodara.
Surat also contributed the highest 256 new cases, --181 from Surat city and remaining from other parts of the district.
It was followed by Ahmedabad which reported 210 new cases, including 187 from Ahmedabad city.
Ahmedabad district has recorded 25,173 cases, the highest in the state, so far.
With Thursday''s increase of 256 cases, tally of cases in Surat district has gone up to 11,384, second highest after Ahmedabad.
Other districts where significant number of cases were reported since Wednesday evening are Vadodara (82), Rajkot (59) and Narmada 44.
Out of around 4.31 lakh quarantined persons in the state, as many as 4.30 lakh are home quarantined while 1,809 are kept in different facilities across the state.
