Abhishek Banerjee has been served with a notice by the Enforcement Directorate asking him to appear in front of the ED officials in Delhi, on September 21st. This is the third notice that Banerjee has been served in the coal smuggling case.
On September 6, Banerjee was seen before the ED officials. He was held for nine hours. Banerjee was again asked to show up at the office on September 6, but he said that it was impossible due to his pre-scheduled politics. He was again asked by the central agency to appear in person on September 21.
Political debate has erupted following the interrogation Banerjee’s questioning. Chief minister Mamata Banerjee attacked the BJP government over the allegations that Modi-Shah and his wife were engaging in vindictive politics. They don’t have any evidence. They only harass him (Abhishek Bangerjee). Mamata Banerjee, her nephew, said that they use the central agencies to harass us when they can’t resist us politically.”
After studying a November 2020 FIR of CBI (Central Bureau of Investigation), the ED filed the case under criminal sections of (PMLA). The CBI’s November 2020 FIR alleged that there was a multi-crore scam involving coal pilferage in relation to Eastern Coalfields Ltd mines located in the Kunustoria, Kajora, and Asansol areas. Anup Majhi, alias Lala, is suspected to be the main suspect in this case.
The ED claimed previously that Abhishek Benderjee was a beneficiary from funds obtained through this illegal trade. He has denied all allegations.
After being interrogated for nine hours by ED, Abhishek Banerjee said on September 6: “It’s difficult to cow us down with these agencies.” We are not Congress and we won’t sit back and observe. We will travel to every place where democracy is being destroyed and mutilated by the BJP.
The ED summoned Abhishek Banerjee’s wife Rujira, Sanjay Basu, and Gyanwant and Shyam Singh, two IPS officers, to question them. Rujira told the central agency, however, that it was impossible for her to travel to Delhi due to the pandemic. She asked for the probe agency to visit her home to interrogate her.
