North Korea confirmed at least six deaths on Friday. In addition, more than 350,000 people were infected in North Korea with the fever that “explosively spread” within the country. The virus had been declared infective in North Korea just a day before the outbreak.
CNN reported that North Korea declared an “explosive COVID-19” outbreak, which has already killed six people and infected over 350,000 more.
The country declared a major national emergency on Thursday after it reported its first COVID-19 Omicron variant case. It also put in place a virus control system of “maximum importance” with Kim Jong Un promising to eliminate the virus.
According to the Korean Central News Agency, top officials including Kim Jong Un discussed the outbreak at a crisis politburo meeting. They also announced that they would establish a “maximum-emergency” virus control system.
NK News reported that Pyongyang’s areas were locked down for two consecutive days.
“Multiple sources also reported panic buying in response to uncertainty about when the lockdown might end,” NK News reported citing sources from Pyongyang.
The Yonhap News Agency reported that North Korea’s coronavirus-free claim is now over.
Kim reportedly pledged to overcome the “unexpected crises” in a meeting on North Korea’s “most crucial emergency” anti-virus system, which had been “firmly maintained” for over two years. Kim instructed all officials to prevent the virus from spreading.
The Yonhap News Agency reported that the North Korean leader demanded that there be a greater vigilance at the borders of all fronts, air and sea in order to prevent “safety vacuums” in national defense. Further, North Korean authorities claimed that samples taken from patients with fever showed that they were identically to the omicron variant.
North Korea claimed that it is working to stop the spread of this virus. According to state media, it also stated that it will offer treatment to omicron-detected people to “root out transmission in the shortest time possible”.
