Australia’s tour to Sri Lanka will proceed as planned: Report

Published on

After weeks of uncertainty and speculation, the Australian team will land in Sri Lanka on Wednesday, June 1. The tour, which includes three T20Is, five OCIs and two Tests, will take place as scheduled.

Sri Lanka Cricket (SLC), confirmed the under-lights play of white ball games that will begin on June 7.

“There’s no disruption to the schedule, and the white-ball games will be night or late-night affairs,” said Mohan de Silva (SLC secretary) on Tuesday.

The political and economic crisis in Sri Lanka has left the country reeling. There have been reports from Australia that players are hesitant to visit the island nation for moral reasons, if not security concerns. Cricbuzz reports that Cricket Australia (CA), says the Australian teams look forward to the tour, which begins with a T20I series.

“We’ve been in regular contact with the governments and SLC of both countries. Everything is fine and there have been no changes to the plans. Tomorrow is the departure of the T20 squad from Australia. They look forward to the tour. The three T20 matches will be an important part of the build up to the ICC World Cup, which takes place in Australia in October and November. A CA spokesperson said that the team has great respect for Sri Lanka and is looking forward to an exciting series.

It has been revealed that the fates of the Asia Cup, which is scheduled to take place in August-September 2013, will depend on the outcome of Sri Lanka’s five-week-long Australia tour.

SLC officials were reported to have met Jay Shah of Asian Cricket Council (ACC), during IPL finals in Ahmedabad. They decided that the event could go ahead in Sri Lanka if Australia is not affected by the tour. The ACC will closely monitor the series.
