Bangladesh will launch a campaign for Covid-19 booster inoculation

Published on

Bangladesh will run a week-long campaign starting June 4, to speed up the inoculation using Covid-19 booster doses.

People aged 18 and over who have received their Covid-19 vaccinations at least four weeks prior to this special campaign will be permitted to receive a booster shot, the Xinhua news agency reported.

On Tuesday, the Directorate General of Health Services within the Health Ministry released a statement in this regard.

According to the release people can receive the booster dose at any nearest vaccination centre starting at 9 a.m. on every day up until June 10.

It stated that the current vaccination drive will continue simultaneously.

To contain the pandemic, Bangladesh started its Covid-19 vaccination drive on January 20, 2021.

After India had banned vaccine exports from India, the Bangladeshi government stopped administering the first doses AstraZeneca vaccine to its citizens. The vaccine rollout was resumed in South Asia in June 2021 by the China-donated Sinopharm vaccines.

China’s Sinopharm vaccines accounted for more than half the total vaccines in the country.

The United Nations Children’s Fund, UNICEF, announced Tuesday that it had delivered more than 190,000,000 Covid-19 vaccine doses in Bangladesh via the COVAX facility. This global initiative to equal access vaccines, led by the WHO and several other organisations with UNICEF as a key partner, is a global initiative to ensure everyone has equal access.

It added that Bangladesh is still the top recipient of vaccine doses in COVAX.

UNICEF claims that COVAX makes up more than 62% of total vaccines Bangladesh has received. It also states that the country has successfully vaccinated 69% of its citizens.
