Dasun Shanaka will be leading a team of 15 from Sri Lanka for the upcoming ICC Men’s T20 World Cup 2021, which will be held in Oman and the UAE in October-November.
Sri Lanka will start their campaign against Namibia in Abu Dhabi on October 18, in Group A of Round 1. They have already drawn Ireland and the Netherlands.
Niroshan Dickwella and Kusal Mendis were the only notable omissions. They were banned for one year for violating the Covid-19 protocols during their July tour of England. Minod Bhanuka, Minod’s wicketkeeper in Perera’s absence, has also been absented due to Kusal Perera’s injury.
Maheesh Theekshana (21), an off-spinner, made his T20I debut against South Africa in the first match and disqualified Heinrich Klaasen. This youngster also did well in his ODI debut, where he picked up four wickets. Left-armer Praveen Jawickrema and Wanindu Hasaranga are the other spinners in the squad.
Jayawickrema, the only uncapped player in the squad, was selected based on his outstanding performances in other formats. He made a great Test debut in April against Bangladesh, taking 11 wickets. He has also played five ODIs and taken five wickets.
Dushmantha Chameera will lead the fast bowling team along with Nuwan Pradeep, a veteran seamer, and Chamika Karunaratne, an all-rounder.
They also identified four reserves who will travel as injury coverage with the squad — Lahiru Kumara Binura Fernando, Akila Daanjaya, Pulina Tharanga and Akila Fernando.
