Equities have settled low after extending losses over the past week

Indian equity benchmarks continued their losses from last week and settled lower Monday.

Market participants are concerned about rising inflation and the possibility of tightening monetary policy in the US.

A negative sign for the Indian market is policy tightening which basically means rate hikes. Investors prefer US markets because they offer higher returns.

Monday’s Sensex close was 56,580 points. Nifty closed at 16,985 and fell 1.1 percentage points.

Among the individual stocks, Coal India was the top gainer among the Nifty50 companies. Hindalco and SBI Life were the top 5 losers among the Nifty 50, with Bajaj Auto (HDFC Bank), ICICI Bank and Axis Bank the top five losers according to NSE data.
