Spanish football club Espanyol appointed Diego Martinez as their new coach Tuesday.
Martinez, 41, has signed a 2-year contract at the club. Victor Moreno, the Barcelona-based coach of Granada, was sacked with just two games left in his season.
Martinez was previously the coach of Sevilla’s B team, which led them to the Spanish second-division. His last position was with Granada. He promoted them to La Liga, and they qualified for the Europa League. Xinhua reports Granada made it to the quarterfinals of this competition, before Manchester United eliminated them.
He decided to leave Granada after the 2020-21 season.
Ye Mao, Espanyol’s CEO, had suggested that a deal between Martinez and the club was near when he said to a gathering of supporters that he expected to announce it “in the coming days.”
Ye said, “He is the type of coach who could give many things to the club.”
