France, 5% of 16-year-olds are illiterate: Report

A report found that 5 percent of French 16-year-olds, or 35,000 people, are illiterate.

French newspaper Le Figaro quoted Friday’s report from the French General Inspection of Education (IGEN), which stated that one in ten young people would have difficulty reading.

The report highlighted the lack of concrete measures to combat illiteracy in the country.

Le Figaro stated that teachers’ “alerts” are ignored.

“Since illiteracy was evaluated in France, numbers are the same: 80 per cent of readers’satisfied,’ 15 percent in difficulty’, and 5 percent?out of the scope,” stated Claude Lelievre (a historian).

Lelievre claimed that illiteracy was not due to teaching methods but to “social origin, culture, and a relationship with written and oral”.

Alain Bentolila a specialist in illiteracy and linguist, stated that the country’s illiteracy was caused by the failure of the Ministry of National Education.
