Germany has more than 28,000 COVID-19-related infections per day

Germany recorded 28 037 new COVID-19 infected within one day, nearly 12,000 more than the week before, according to the Robert Koch Institute (RKI).

According to the RKI (the federal agency and research center responsible for disease prevention and control), the seven-day incidence rate rose to 130.2 cases per 100,000 people. This is a significant increase from 118 the previous day and 85.6 the week before.

The German Hospital Federation (DKG), in view of the rising number of infections, warned against overburdening hospitals. Gerald Gass (DKG chairman), said that the country is in a “critical situation” due to the pandemic. RedaktionsNetzwerk Deutschland, an editorial group for national content at the Madsack publishing house in Hanover, was informed by Gass on Thursday.

In just one week, hospitalisations increased by 40% and intensive care units saw a 15% increase in patients. Gass stated, “If this trend continues we will have 3,000 intensive care patients again in two weeks.”

According to Germany’s DIVI intensive care registry, nearly 1,800 COVID-19 victims were being treated in ICUs at the moment. In January 2018, more than 5,700 COVID-19 victims were admitted to ICUs in Germany, at the height of the epidemic.

Paediatricians hoped for quick approval of BioNTech vaccine in Europe due to high rates of child infections. Joerg Doetsch (president of the German Society of Pediatrics and Adolescent Medicine) spoke to Funke Mediengruppe.

According to the German vaccine designer, an advisory committee of the US Food and Drug Administration (FDA), recommended Tuesday emergency approval for BioNTech/Pfizer’s COVID-19 vaccine. This vaccine is intended to be used in children under 11. The final decision is still possible.

According to the RKI, Germany’s COVID-19 vaccination rate was 66.5 percent by Wednesday. This means that 55.3 million Germans had been fully vaccinated as of Wednesday. For adolescents between 12 and 17, the respective rate is 40.9 percent.
