Gujarat’s first Omicron case detected in Jamnagar

Gujarat registered its first Omicron case on Saturday after a Zimbabwean resident arrived in Jamnagar and was infected by Covid-19’s latest mutant.

Dr S. Chatterjee, the Nodal Officer for Corona, GG Hospital Jamnagar, stated to IANS that samples from the 72-year old Zimbabwean resident were sent to Biotechnological Laboratory in Ahmedabad and tested positive for Omicron. Since his admission, the patient has been kept in isolation. We checked his contacts and found none. We will test all of his contacts again. His samples were sent to Ahmedabad, India, for genomic sequencing.

According to local legend, the man is a Jamnagar native who has lived in Zimbabwe for many decades.

On November 28, he arrived in New York to meet his father. His doctor recommended that he get an RTPCR test after he developed a fever. The private laboratory reported that he was positive for Covid-19, as required.
