In a criminal case brought by Sahara, court summons Netflix and its officers

On Wednesday, the court of Special Chief Judiciary Magistrate Lucknow issued summons to Netflix India Director Abhishek Nag and Nick Read, as well as Reva Sharma, Netflix Producer, in order to direct their appearance before it on Nov 15. This was in relation to a criminal case filed by Sahara for publishing and making an “outrageous” trailer/documentary titled “Bad Boy Billionaires”.

The accused will be tried according to sections 500, 501 and 502 Indian Penal Code.

The court first took cognisance the offenses committed by the accused and recorded the statements of complainant as well as their witnesses. After being satisfied with the evidence, the court issued summons for the trial of the accused for the alleged offences.

Netflix, an OTT platform broadcast a documentary series titled “Bad Boy Billionaires”, which was telecast in October 2020. It focuses on Subrata Roy Sahara, Chairman of Sahara Group, along with Vijay Mallya, and Nirav Modi.

Saharas also filed a civil lawsuit against Netflix India, their directors, producers, etc. for Rs 500 crore. This suit was brought before the Alipore, Kolkata court. The court has already summoned the defendants/accused for their appearance and requested that they submit evidence/reply.

Sahara strongly reacted to the Netflix series “Bad Boy Billionaires”, and claimed it was completely untrue. It stated that Netflix created a commercial film with sensationalism and ill-conceived titles called “Bad Boy Billionaires” to make a profit. This was at the expense of Sahara Group’s image, which is highly objectionable and unacceptable.
