Insurance Companies are not on your side – Protect yourself in case of an auto accident

What you should do if your car is involved in an accident

Most people don’t know how to respond when they are in an accident. My mother was in an accident recently and called me to ask what she should do. Protecting your health and your interests is key to protecting yourself and your relationships with other drivers as well the insurance companies. Even if you are not at fault, this is important.

Your safety is the most important thing following an accident. If you or the other driver are seriously hurt, you should call 911. 911 is your one-stop phone number for ambulance and police. Even if there are no injuries to anyone involved, it is advisable to call 911 for non-emergency assistance and to request that police be present at the scene. For non-emergency dispatch, you can dial 311 in most major cities including Las Vegas and the surrounding areas.

It is important to have the police present in case of injuries or property damage. A police report can then be prepared. The compensation may include medical treatment, property damage and loss of wages as well as pain and suffering.

When the police are called via a 911 emergency call or 311 not-emergency, they will make sure that all the relevant information is included in the police reports. If there are no injuries or property damage and/or the police have not arrived on the scene, you can exchange information with the other driver. Get the name and registration information of the driver and the policy number and details of the insurance carrier. Give your information to the other driver.

You should only give facts and not anything else to the police about the accident or how it occurred. Do not give any information about your current health. Remember that some injuries can be hidden and not visible immediately. Do not contact the insurance company of another party, or report the accident to it. Before consulting with a personal lawyer about personal injury, you should immediately call a personal Injury attorney. The attorney usually assumes responsibility for making these contacts on your behalf. However, they will advise you if any other contacts should be made. It is in the best interest of insurance companies to minimize the damage and injuries caused by an accident so they can pay the lowest amount of compensation. The attorney will know how to work with insurance companies to get you the compensation that you are due. A personal injury lawyer is more important for serious accidents.
