Rashid Khan, the leg-spinner, has been working his magic in IPL 2022. He picked 18 wickets in 15 matches at an economy of 6.73. Fans were left jaw-dropped by his 0/15 performance against Rajasthan Royals in Qualifier 1.
Rashid’s batting performance has attracted more attention in the tournament, as he has hit 40 runs off 21 balls against Chennai Super Kings while hitting 31 runs off only 11 against Sunrisers Hyderabad in league stage.
Gujarat will now face Rajasthan in the final. Rashid stated that the key to his confidence was the think-tank’s belief that he would get the 20-25 runs.
Rashid, who used to bat at eight, has now been batting at six or seven. He also invented his signature shot — the snake shot. Although he only scored 91 runs over eight innings, it is hard to ignore his staggering strike rate of 206.81. He also ranks seventh in the list with 227.5 runs.
“I have batted higher this year than I did before. The coaching staff, captain, and all the players have given me confidence. They showed their ability to score and perform; that’s what you need as a player. I have been given that confidence and another thing is that there’s more batting practice, which means I am batting more.
Rashid said in the prefinal virtual press conference that he believes that anyone can deliver and score crucial runs for the team.
“The confidence and opportunity that you needed as a player was there, and you have the ability to believe that you can deliver for your team. This has been the reason that IPL has seen more success with the bat,” said Rashid. Rashid said that he enjoys it and the positive energy around him. When guys believe in them, performance naturally comes out.”
Rashid also gave credit to middle-order batter David Miller, who scored 449 runs over 15 matches at an average 64.14 and a strike-rate of 141.9, for helping him feel confident in chasing any target throughout the tournament.
“He’s a positive thinker and the bowling team doesn’t put you under that much pressure. Sometimes it is easy to feel high-stakes and you think about it a lot. We have chased 190 plus a few times, which was a great sign. It’s also great to have David, who is in-from at middle. They have faith in him and that makes it easy for them to be at the top of the order.”
“Rahul (Tewatia), at the end, that really helped the team. T20 cricket’s number four, five, six, and six are important positions. It helps to win maximum games if they are all in good form. No matter what target they have, their scores are crucial.
“Especially when you consider the game against CSK, where Miller scored 94 not-out in a chase for 170). We lost three-four wickets before David brought out an innings that showed his class. It gives a team positive vibe.”
Rashid believed that his attitude with the ball would not change for final. He will continue to follow his normal gameplans in the fight for the trophy. “I don’t have anything that says I will enter the playoffs with an altered mind or play different matches with a different mentality. You must have the same energy, confidence, and mindset in every match. However, in the playoffs teams are more cautious and take less risk. They play better when it is safe.
My mindset does not change. I continue to look for ways to bowl tight and well, which allows the other bowlers to take risks and give me a chance at picking a wicket. I try to keep the same mindset, no matter what format, in all matches, leagues, or finals. Although I don’t get many wickets, I am efficient economy-wise. However, I try to increase the pressure so that the wicket comes from the other side.
