After the auction of media rights, IPL became number-2, know how much is the difference from number-1

Even before the bidding for the media rights auction, it was decided to rise above the IPL to become the number two league, but the Indian Cricket Board probably did not even think that these figures would be so tremendous.

IPL has taken a giant leap in world cricket after the media rights auction for the next five years. Not only did BCCI get rich from this auction, the status of IPL in the world has also become much bigger than before. The money figures that came out after the rights auction are more than what the BCCI expected, but after talking about it, let’s first know what has changed in the status of IPL in the World Leagues.

IPL at No. 4 in the world before the auction

The IPL, as of season 2022, was ranked fourth among all sports leagues in the world on the basis of broadcasting fees per match. The National Football League (NFL) was at number one, the English Premier League (EPL) at number two, and Major League Baseball (MLB) at number three. Even before the bidding for the IPL 2023-2027 media rights auction, it was decided to rise to the number two league, but perhaps the Indian Cricket Board did not even think that these figures would be so tremendous.

IPL becomes world’s second most valuable league

Currently, a game in the National Football League costs a broadcaster US$17 million, which is the biggest cost. Prior to the IPL media rights auction, the English Premier League came in second with a payout of $11 million per match. With roughly the same amount, Major League Baseball stood at number three. At the same time, IPL got 9 million US dollars for every IPL match in the last five years. Now after the auction, IPL has taken a giant leap. India’s cricket league has come at number two in this list with US$ 15.2 million, ahead of which NFL is now standing by a margin of just $ 1.8 million.

BCCI got bigger amount than expected from IPL rights

The Indian Board’s secretary, Jay Shah, had revealed before the auction was put up that the IPL would become the second most valuable league in the world. He had said, “In the last five years, we got 9 million US dollars for every match. This time, the way we have fixed the minimum base price, BCCI will get USD 12 million per match. It will be a big leap for Indian cricket on the world stage. After that we will be only behind the NFL.”

The picture is clear, the IPL has performed 20 per cent better than the BCCI’s expectation. Now there are 10 teams in IPL, more matches are happening, it is also expanding in the world, so new records were bound to be created with the auction of new media rights of IPL.
