NEW DELHI 25 OCT 25: Boxers Rohit and Akash will launch India’s challenge at the AIBA Men’s World Boxing Championships in Belgrade, Serbia, on Monday.
Rohit, who stunned Mohammad Hussamuddin last month to win gold at the Nationals, will face Jean Caicedo from Ecuador, a pugilist who has competed in 2020 Tokyo Olympics. Akash, 21, will be opening his campaign against Adem Fukran in the 67kg division.
Two Indian pugilists, Sanjeet (92kg) reigning Asian champion and Sachin (80kg), were given first-round byes in respective categories during the draw ceremony.
Deepak Bhoria (51kg), will face a tough challenge in his first round match against Azat Usenaliev, a two-time Asian champion from Kyrgyzstan.
Deepak, in-form, won the senior national title last month after defeating Shakhobidin Zoirov, an Olympic champion from Uzbekistan, at Strandja Memorial Tournament.
Shiva Thapa (63kg), Govind Sahani (48kg), Varinder Sing (60kg), Nishant dev (71kg), Sumit (77.5kg), Sumit (75kg), Lakshyachahar (86kg), Narender (+92kg), and Sumit (63.5kg) are some of the boxers from the 13-member Indian contingent that will compete in the 21st edition. The event will continue until November 6.
This event will feature competition between top boxers representing more than 100 countries around the globe. The championships will also be held in 13 weight categories, as per the AIBA’s new weight divisions.
Each category’s gold medalists will receive $100,000, while the silver and bronze medallists each will receive $50,000 and $25,000, respectively.
