Ranil Wickremesinghe was born in Colombo, Sri Lanka on 24/03/49. Ranil Wickremesinghe, the current Prime Minister of Sri Lanka, is a Member from the National Party’s Parliament. Since 1994, he has been the leader of United National Party. He was the Prime Minister of Sri Lanka between 1993 and 1994, 2001 to 2004 and 2015 to 2018, 2018 to 2019, and 2019 to 2019.
Ranil Wickremesinghe was born into a political, wealthy family. He graduated from the University of Ceylon in 1972 and became a Ceylon Law College lawyer in 1972. He entered active politics in the mid-1970s with the United National Party and was elected first from Byagama to the parliament. He became a voter during the 1977 parliamentary election and was then nominated by President J.R. Jayawardene to become Deputy Minister for External Affairs. He was elected Minister of Youth Affairs and Employment in Sri Lanka, making him the youngest cabinet minister.
1989 saw President Ranasinghe Premadasa name Wickremesinghe Minister of Industry, Science and Technology and Leader to the House. Following Premadasa’s assassination and Vijetunga’s succession to the presidency, DB Wijetunga was assassinated. In 1993, Wickremesinghe succeeded Wickremesinghe as prime minister. In November 1994, Wickremesinghe was named Leader of Opposition following the assassination Gamini Dianayake in the 1994 presidential election campaign. Wickremesinghe was elected Prime Minister by President Maithripala Sirisena on the 8th of January 2015. He defeated President Mahindarajapaksa at the 2015 presidential elections.
Ranil Wickremesinghe’s coalition coalition, the United National Front for Good Governance, won the 2015 parliamentary election with 106 seats. Even though this was not enough to win an absolute majority, Wickremesinghe won a second term as Prime Minister. His cabinet included more than 35 members of the Sri Lanka Freedom Party.
