Azam Khan’s plea against the cancellation of the lease of Jauhar University land by the Uttar Pradesh government was not granted relief by the Supreme Court. The court directed him to approach the Allahabad High Court, where the Chief Justice would constitute a bench to hear the matter.
The Samajwadi Party-led government had earlier granted a lease for 99 years at a nominal rate to Jauhar University, which led to the cancellation by the present government citing violations of lease conditions. This case, likely to be investigated by the Enforcement Directorate (ED), gained attention in the first week of October 2023.
Allegations Against Azam Khan: The UP government accused Azam Khan of utilizing government funds of ₹106.56 crores during his tenure in the UP government to work at his Maulana Ali Jauhar University in Rampur. The Yogi Adityanath government labeled the case as a clash of interests.
The UP government stated, “Azam Khan was also the minister in the department that issued money to the university. He was a lifetime trustee in the trust through which the university was constructed, and he was also the lifetime chancellor of the university.”
Irregularities at Jauhar University: Apart from the financial allegations, Jauhar University faced accusations of irregularities. The UP government claimed that work at the university occurred without proper sanctions. Allegations included unauthorized work by the Water Department and irregularities by the PWD Department. The case has been transferred to the UP High Court for a comprehensive hearing.
