Seoul will resume late-night subway service starting June

On Saturday, the Seoul subway’s labor union said that it reached an agreement in principle with Seoul’s government to expand public transport services beyond midnight. This comes two years after they were reduced due to the Covid-19 pandemic.

Seoul Metro, an operator of the subway, announced that their operation hours would be extended from midnight on weekdays to 1 a.m. on weekends starting next month. However, exact dates will vary according to the subway line.

Lines 2 and 6, 8 will be offering extended night service starting in June. Lines 1, 3, and 4 will likely start around August.

After approval by Ministry of Land, Infrastructure and Transport, the schedule change for Line 5 is confirmed.

This agreement excludes weekends and holidays. The public was outraged at the difficulty of grabbing taxis in the evenings after significant social distancing restrictions were removed.

Since April 1, 2020, the late-night service has been discontinued
