The Taliban have welcomed India’s decision that it will send its technical team to Kabul. This will allow them to continue humanitarian assistance in Afghanistan.
“Islamic Emirate of Afghanistan (lEA) welcomes decision by India to return diplomats & technical team to their embassy in Kabul to continue their relations with the Afghan people and their humanitarian assistance,” Taliban spokesperson Abdul Qahar Balkhi said in a statement on Thursday.
“The return of Indian diplomats to Afghanistan and reopening of embassy demonstrates that security is established in the country, & all political and diplomatic rights are respected,” the statement added.
According to international diplomatic practice, the Taliban spokesperson also assured security for all embassies. It said that “IEA calls upon other countries to return their diplomatic compounds, and reopen all embassies.”
India announced Thursday that a technical team was deployed to Kabul Embassy to coordinate efforts by all stakeholders to deliver humanitarian aid.
“In order closely monitor and coordinate efforts of different stakeholders for the effective delivery of humanitarian aid and in continuation of engagement with the Afghan people,” an Indian technical team reached Kabul today, and was deployed at our Embassy there,” the Ministry of External Affairs said in a press release.
A second Indian team recently visited Kabul to supervise the humanitarian aid delivery to Afghanistan. They also met with top Taliban officials. A security assessment was also done during the visit.
MEA stated that the long-standing relationships between India and Afghanistan as well as the development partnership between both countries, including humanitarian assistance, will guide the approach moving forward.
The first shipment of India’s earthquake aid assistance arrived in Kabul on Thursday to help Afghanistan.
To support Afghan nationals who were affected by the earthquake, the Indian team has handed the consignment over. The second consignment will follow.
“First shipment of India’s earthquake relief aid for Afghanistan reaches Kabul. Indian team in Kabul handed the parcel over. “More consignment follows,” Arindam Bagchi, spokesperson for MEA, said in a tweet.
This support was extended following Wednesday’s earthquake in Pakistan and Afghanistan that claimed more than 1000 lives.
The earthquake struck near Khost in the country’s southeast. It was felt in Spera District, Khost Province, as well as Barmala and Ziruk districts in Paktika Province.
This disaster is occurring as Afghanistan continues to suffer from a severe economic crisis after the Taliban took control. The US-led international forces pulled out of Afghanistan following 20 years of war.
